Let’s get this out of the way first:
You absolutely don’t need the internet to enjoy camping.
But… if you’re anything like thousands of campers all around the world, a tiny part of you still wonders:

“What if I could check a map? Or send a message? Or do just one video call… from the woods?”

And suddenly you’re looking at Starlink Mini pictures thinking, “That doesn’t look too big… maybe?”

Good news — this guide won’t judge you.
Better news — it also won’t hype Starlink up like a magical satellite unicorn.
This is the real stuff: what works, what doesn’t, what campers actually ask, and whether the price makes sense.

Let’s get into it.

What Starlink Actually Is (The Camper-Friendly Explanation)

Starlink is basically internet from space.
Thousands of small satellites flying above you beam down internet straight to a little dish you bring with you.

There are two versions most campers consider:

1. Starlink Mini

Small. Portable. Designed for travel.
You can power it from a battery, put it on a rock, and go.

2. Standard Starlink + “Roam” plan

Bigger dish but still portable.
More powerful, but also more annoying to lug around unless you’re car camping or RVing.

If you want something that fits in a backpack, the Mini is the one people are buying.

Does Starlink Work for Camping?

Short answer: Yes — in the right conditions.
Long answer: It depends on where you’re camping, what’s above your head, and what you expect to do online.

Starlink works beautifully if:

you’re in an open area

you can see the sky

there are no trees blocking the dish

you’re okay with occasional drops

you don’t mind setting up a small device

Starlink does not work beautifully if:

you’re deep in the woods

tall trees surround your tent

you’re in a narrow canyon

you want zero interruptions on video calls

Starlink loves open sky.
Starlink hates trees. One single tree can ruin the whole experience. It’s almost petty.

Real campers report going from full-speed streaming…
to “why is everything frozen”
simply by moving 10 meters closer to a pine tree.

Real Questions Campers Keep Asking

Here are the questions that come up again and again from people who’ve actually taken Starlink camping.

1. Will Starlink work in a forest?

Here’s the honest answer:
If you can see the sky, it’s great. If you can see branches, it’s not.

It doesn’t matter if the dish is powerful — satellites move. Anything blocking the view (even a little) causes micro-outages.

These micro-outages feel like:

10 seconds of smooth internet

5 seconds of “nope.”

repeat forever

Fine for browsing.
Terrible for video calls.

2. Can I do video calls while camping?

Technically, yes. Realistically:

You can do video calls.

You cannot guarantee they’ll be interruption-free.

Campers report Teams/Zoom calls having:

audio dropouts

frozen screens

momentary disconnects
especially under trees or hills.

If you need to work from a campsite, go somewhere with a wide-open view.

3. How fast is Starlink when camping?

Typical speeds people see on the Starlink Mini:

50–200 Mbps download

5–20 Mbps upload

Sometimes lower.
Sometimes shockingly high (up to ~300 Mbps).
It depends entirely on sky visibility and the local satellite load.

Basically:
Fast enough to stream.
Fast enough for big downloads.
Fast enough for gaming.
But it may still stutter if trees are nearby.

4. Is the Mini enough? Or do I need the larger dish?

Most campers say the Mini is perfect for:

cordless work sessions

tent camping

minimalist setups

car camping where space matters

saving power

You only need the bigger dish if you want the most stable possible connection — or you’re running an RV setup and don’t care about space or power use.

5. How much power does Starlink use?

Rough real-world numbers (Mini):

20–40 watts while running

Can be powered from a portable power station

Works with 12v setups (often used in vans and off-grid rigs)

This matters because many campers overestimate how much battery they need.
Starlink is surprisingly power-friendly for what it does.

6. Is Starlink worth it for occasional camping?

Good question — and one many campers discuss constantly.

Starlink isn’t cheap. You’re paying for:

the hardware

the monthly plan

possibly roaming fees

If you camp once a year?
Probably not worth it.

If you:

travel often

enjoy remote spots

need internet for work

like being reachable for emergencies

get anxiety in areas with no cell service

…then yes, Starlink can feel like a superpower.

Where Starlink Works Best (and Worst)

Starlink doesn’t really care about states — it cares about sky visibility and local satellite congestion.
But geography does matter.

Best Places for Starlink Camping

open deserts

prairies

beaches

mountain plateaus

large lakesides

fields

wide-open campgrounds

Basically: anywhere with a clear view of the sky.

Most Challenging Places

thick forests

pine-heavy regions

deep valleys

narrow canyons

heavily wooded state parks

If the sky looks like a green roof, Starlink will struggle.

Comparing Starlink to Other Internet Options for Camping

Before spending hundreds, it’s smart to compare it to simpler (and cheaper) options.

1. Mobile Hotspots

Great if:

you’re near a town

your carrier actually has service

Useless if:

you’re off-grid

or in national forests with no towers

2. Cell Signal Boosters

These don’t create a signal — they only boost a weak signal.
If you have zero bars, a booster gives you… a very confident zero bars.

3. Offline Everything

Many campers realize they don’t need internet at all and simply bring:

offline maps

downloaded playlists

downloaded movies

books

emergency GPS devices

This often ends up being the simplest and cheapest solution.

Set-Up Tips That Make Starlink Work Better While Camping

These come straight from experienced Starlink campers:

• Set up in the most open area you can find

Move 5–10 meters away from tree lines if possible.

• Raise the dish a bit

On a stump, tripod, cooler — anything.

• Don’t tuck it by your tent

Even your tent’s roof can cause small obstructions.

• Run the app’s “obstruction checker.”

Starlink has a tool that literally shows you where the sky is blocked.

• Use a power station that fits your needs

A 300–500Wh power station can run the Mini for hours.

Is Starlink Worth It for Camping? The Honest Verdict

It’s worth it if:

you camp in remote areas

you enjoy staying connected

you work while traveling

you need emergency access

you love tech and convenience

you value being able to check weather, maps, and messages anywhere

It’s not worth it if:

you camp mostly in forests

you only camp a few times per year

you don’t mind offline trips

your trips already have good cell signal

the price stings more than the benefit

Starlink isn’t something every camper needs.
But for the right person, it completely changes what’s possible in the outdoors.

Final Thoughts

Starlink won’t replace the joy of going off-grid — but it can make it safer, more convenient, and more flexible.

If you look at camping the way many modern campers do — a blend of nature, comfort, and sometimes even work — Starlink becomes a pretty compelling tool.

And if nothing else, it’s hard not to smile at the idea of doing a Google Meet call… from the edge of a lake… miles from civilization.

Perhaps it’s best not to tell your coworkers.

Some campsites have power. Many of the best ones… don’t.
And that’s usually the moment you realize your phone battery drops faster in the wild than anywhere else on Earth.

So let’s talk about camping with power without turning your trip into a mobile science project or lugging around equipment that belongs on a construction site.

This guide keeps things simple, practical, and very doable. No overkill. No tech talk unless it’s genuinely helpful. Just what you actually need out there.

Why Power Matters More Than You Think

Everyone claims they’re going “off-grid.”
But then nighttime hits, someone wants to take a photo, someone else wants a fan, and suddenly you’ve got four people leaning over one tiny power bank like it’s the last match on the planet.

Good power doesn’t make your trip less “authentic.”
It just prevents the kind of chaos that ruins good camping trips.

Let’s break down the real options.

1. The Simple Stuff: Light + Phone Charging

Most people don’t need a power station the size of a microwave.
If your goal is to:

Charge a phone

Run with a headlamp

Maybe recharge a small speaker

Then a solid power bank is your best friend.

Think 20,000–30,000 mAh for a weekend trip.
Think 40,000–50,000 mAh if you’re out for longer or have two devices.

Quick tip:
If your power bank can charge your phone 4–6 times, you’re golden.

Useful Trick:
Bring two small power banks instead of one massive one.
If one dies or fails, you’re still in business. Also, sharing becomes much easier when no one wants to hand over their only battery source.

2. When You Need “Real Power” But Don’t Want a Generator

Photo by Jackery Power Station on Unsplash

Let’s say you want:

A small fridge

A fan

To run a CPAP

Charge cameras, drones, or a laptop

This is where portable power stations come in.
Yes, the Jackery/Bluetti/EcoFlow types you’ve probably seen online.

But here’s the thing…

You don’t need the monster size you saw on YouTube.
You’re not running a festival.

Here’s what actually works:

300 Wh
Perfect for phones, cameras, and lights.
Think “lightweight comfort.”

500 Wh
Sweet spot for most campers.
Fridge? Yes. Fans? Yes.
Laptop + phones? Easy.

1000 Wh
This is “I have a family, a fridge, and I enjoy iced coffee in the woods” territory.

Honesty moment:
Nobody nails their size on the first try.
You either go too small and swear you need more…
Or go too big and spend half the trip saying, “I really didn’t need all this.”

3. Do You Need Solar? Let’s Talk About It Honestly.

Photo by Jackery Power Station on Unsplash

Let’s be real.
When people hear “solar panels,” they picture the giant roof panels from their neighbor’s house.

So, let’s clear this up:
No. We are not talking about those.
Portable camping solar panels fold up like a laptop and weigh less than your cooler.
They’re basically phone chargers with ambition.

Should you get them?

Solar makes sense if:

You camp for 3+ days

You’re far from the car

You’re using a power station

You’re in sunny weather (looking at you, Arizona)

Solar makes no sense if:

You’re in the forest under the shade of 200 trees

You just need to charge phones

You’re only out for a night or two

The truth:
Solar is magical when it works.
It’s useless when it doesn’t.
Still, it’s a fun backup if you’re out long enough.

4. Your Car Is Basically a Giant Charging Station

If you drive to your campsite, congratulations!
You already own the biggest power source in the area.

Most campers underestimate how useful this is.

You can:

Charge a power bank

Recharge your power station

Top up lights, headlamps, anything USB

Run things for a couple of minutes without draining your battery

You don’t need complicated setups.
A simple 12V car charger or USB-C fast charger works beautifully.

Our advice:
Top everything up while driving to the campsite.
That head start can save your whole weekend.

5. The “What Should I Bring?” Cheat Sheet

This is where most guides overdo it.
Here’s the no-nonsense version:

For a weekend trip with no electricity:

1–2 power banks (20k–30k mAh)

Rechargeable headlamp

A lantern (USB rechargeable)

Optional: small 300–500 Wh power station

For longer trips or gear-heavy setups:

500 – 1000 Wh power station

60 – 100W solar panel (optional)

Extra cables (people always forget these)

For minimalists:

Power bank

Headlamp

Done.

Final Thoughts: You Don’t Need to Overthink This

Most people overcomplicate camping power because they imagine the worst-case scenario:

“What if everything dies? What if I can’t charge anything? What if I’m stuck?”

Relax.
You’re outside to enjoy nature, not run a data center.

With the right setup, whether that’s a single power bank or a small power station, you’ll be completely fine.

And don’t worry, we’re saving the budget-friendly gear list (with real product picks that actually make sense) for the next article. That’s where we’ll talk about gear that gives you the best value without turning your backpack into a battery store.

Picking a campsite can be the difference between a trip you talk about for years and a night spent listening to water creep toward your sleeping bag. The good news is that choosing a good spot isn’t complicated. You need a few clear things to look for, a bit of common sense, and a mindset that camping is supposed to be enjoyable, not stressful.

Below is a practical guide built for tent campers. It includes smart, beginner-friendly tips, field-tested habits, and a few clever little hacks that seasoned campers tend to forget they’re even using.

Understanding the Land Before You Set Up

Spot the subtle signs of water flow

Before choosing a spot, take a minute to read the ground. Look for faint grooves or small channels in the dirt. These “erosion lines” show exactly where rainwater has flowed before. If you see them, imagine what that same path would look like during a storm. If it leads toward your tent, move higher. This simple observation has saved countless nights of soggy misery.

We tried our best to illustrate what to look out for in the image below. Feel free to save it and bring it on your adventure so you know what to look for!

Think about the slope

A perfectly flat surface might seem perfect until it rains. A gentle, barely noticeable slope allows water to flow past your tent instead of collecting underneath it. Too steep and you’ll slide toward the door all night. Aim for something almost flat but not quite.

The Five W’s of Smart Tent Placement

These come from one of the simplest and smartest rules used by many experienced campers. Each “W” helps you avoid a problem or adds a little extra comfort.

Water

You want water nearby enough for convenience, but not so close that you wake up in a puddle or deal with heavy condensation. Stay far enough back that the ground is dry and firm. If the soil feels soft or muddy, you’re too close. Always try to make sure you stay dry while camping!

Extra tip: Check the height of the vegetation. Taller plants usually mean the ground stays wetter.

Wind

Wind can be your friend or your worst enemy. Use the landscape to your advantage. Trees, hedges, rock formations, or even a slight rise can block strong gusts. Test the area by simply standing still and noticing the breeze. If it hits you from the same direction over and over again, assume your tent will get the same treatment.

Widowmakers

A “widowmaker” is any dead or unstable tree or branch that could fall without warning. Look up, even if it feels unnecessary. If a branch looks suspicious or you see bark peeling off in long sheets, move. It takes five seconds to check and might save you from a dangerous night.

Wildlife

Avoid game trails, ant hills, burrows, and berry bushes. Animals use the same paths repeatedly, so if the ground looks worn or unusually clear of vegetation, it is probably a routine highway for something that does not care about your tent.

Wow effect

This is the permission to enjoy yourself. Pick a spot that feels good. After all the practical boxes are checked, choose the place that gives you a sense of excitement for the night ahead. It might be a nice clearing, a sunrise view, or a quiet niche in the trees.

Small Positioning Tricks That Make a Big Difference

Keep your door facing downhill or toward open space

This keeps the condensation vented and makes it easier to enter without dragging dirt inside. It also helps with morning airflow when the campsite warms up.

Check the ground carefully

Even one small root under your hip can ruin a night. Sweep the surface with your hand or foot before laying out the tent. You’ll be surprised how often you find something you missed visually.

Stay away from anthills

Photo by Seval Torun on Unsplash

They are easy to overlook when you’re excited to set up. A few scouting seconds now can save hours of painful frustration later.

Feel the temperature difference

Walk your area slowly. Trees, rocks, and low pockets of air trap cold differently. If one spot feels noticeably cooler, that is cold air settling. Aim slightly higher.

Clever Visual Tricks for Beginners

Use the shadow test

If you arrive early enough, use the shadows to predict how hot your tent will get. If the morning sun hits your tent directly, expect an early wake-up. If you prefer slow mornings or plan to sleep in, pick a spot with shade during the first hours of daylight.

Use your footprint

Stand in the exact spot you think your tent will go. Look around slowly in a full circle. This helps you catch things you might miss when your attention is on the ground. People often discover that their “perfect” spot is actually right next to a low branch, a fire pit, or a noisy camping neighbor.

Mistakes Beginners Make (And How To Avoid Them)

Choosing a place only because it looks pretty

Setting up in a low-lying bowl where cold air collects

Ignoring tree health

Pitching too close to the water for the “view.”

Not accounting for the wind and waking up in a shaking tent

Rushing the setup without checking the ground properly

Each one is simple to avoid once you know what to look for.

Your Quick, Practical Campsite Checklist

Feel free to print this checklist or keep it on your phone so it’s always with you on your next trip.

Ground is firm, slightly elevated, and free of erosion lines

No dead trees or unstable branches overhead

No anthills, burrows, or animal paths nearby

Enough distance from water for a dry, safe setup

Natural wind protection is available

Soft, even ground free of roots and sharp objects

A comfortable temperature pocket, not a cold dip

Shade or sunlight, based on your preference

Room to enter and exit your tent comfortably

A spot that feels right once all the essentials are covered

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right campsite should feel adventurous, not complicated. Every skill you need can be learned in a few trips. The more you practice reading the land, the faster it becomes second nature. Eventually, you won’t even think about it. You’ll just walk into a forest and know exactly where you want to sleep.

And that is the real magic of tent camping.

There’s something special about a quiet night under the open sky. When the campfire settles, the air cools, and the stars begin to appear one by one, camping becomes more than just a trip — it feels like a small adventure above your head. Night-sky camping is peaceful, simple, and a great way to enjoy nature in a different way.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through some of the best places in the USA for stargazing and give a few tips to help make your next night under the stars even better.

What Makes a Good Stargazing Spot?

You don’t need much to enjoy the night sky, but a few things make a big difference:

Low light pollution: Far from towns or cities; dark-sky parks are ideal.

High elevation: Clearer skies with less haze.

Dry climate: Deserts and mountains offer excellent visibility.

Open horizons: Fewer trees or canyon walls blocking the view.

New-moon nights: The darker the night, the brighter the Milky Way.

With these in mind, let’s look at some of the best places across the country

Best Stargazing Locations in the USA

Pack warm layers:
It’s usually colder than expected once the sun sets.

Use binoculars:
You don’t need a telescope. A simple pair of binoculars works great for star clusters and the Milky Way.

Look up slowly:
Allow your eyes some time to adjust — around 15 to 20 minutes is enough.

Night-sky viewing is great for families. Kids love spotting constellations, satellites, or even a shooting star. Bring warm drinks, blankets, and turn it into a relaxed and fun activity.

A simple “night sky scavenger hunt” can also make things exciting:

Find the Big Dipper

Spot a bright planet

Count shooting stars

Look for the Milky Way band

These small challenges help keep everyone engaged.

It’s easy to forget, but nighttime camping needs care too.

Keep the lights dim and pointed down

Stay quiet to avoid disturbing wildlife

Put out campfires safely

Pack out all trash

Small actions help keep these places beautiful for everyone who visits after you.

Night-sky camping is one of the most peaceful experiences you can have outdoors. Whether you’re watching the Milky Way stretch across the sky or spotting a bright planet rising over the horizon, moments like these stay with you for a long time.

Pick a dark, quiet spot, bring a warm blanket, and enjoy the view. The night sky always has something special to show.

Do you hear the call of the wild? Over 15 million Americans who’d never been camping before tried this exciting experience for the first time in the last two years — and the trend shows no signs of slowing down.

The good news? More and more people are connecting with nature. There’s a downside, too, though. Because of this spike in popularity, finding a spot at a campsite is harder than ever before! That means you may need to work a little harder to carve out the perfect camping experience for you and your party, and you may even want to look a little further afield.

Want the best possible camping trip? We’ll help you narrow down your options with a list of the best US states for camping — and will give you some fantastic campsites to consider, too.

1. Rhode Island: Best Overall

It might seem unbelievable that the country’s smallest state would have the most expansive camping opportunities, but it’s not far from the truth!

It isn’t just that Rhode Island’s best campsites are equipped with the best amenities, but that the state has an amazing variety of landscapes, from lush forests to picturesque coastlines, or that there are exciting activities for every taste — from fishing to kayaking, and from hiking to swimming.

It’s also that all the things you could want to experience while camping in Rhode Island are within convenient driving distance, and Rhode Island is one of the safest places to go camping.

So, where? To get your brainstorming session off to a great start, we recommend checking out:

Burlingame State Park in Charlestown has wonderful fishing and hiking opportunities, beautiful picnic tables, and clean restrooms.

Utah’s raw, breathtaking beauty makes the state the perfect place to go road-tripping. Whether you’re traveling in an RV or plan to pitch your tent at one of Utah’s otherworldly national parks, you can’t miss out on the sheer variety the Salt Lake State offers — and you’ll be good to go even if you plan to do absolutely nothing but admire all the natural wonders.

Are you up for a more active camping trip? Besides hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, and river rafting, you definitely have to check Utah’s dark sky parks out. Protected from the light pollution that defines so many areas, these parks allow you to admire the Milky Way galaxy in all its natural glory.

Looking for a place to camp out? Our top three picks for Utah are:

Watchman Campground in Zion National Park is open all year and has trash collection and restroom facilities available. Campers aren’t allowed to start fires, but the fact that you’ll have access to the campground’s trolley system, exciting trails, and stunning views of red rock cliffs more than makes up for that! Plus, Zion National Park is famous for its amazing stargazing opportunities!

Dead Horse Point State Park Campground is an international Dark Sky spot that looks out over the Colorado River. You’ll be able to explore the nearby Canyonlands National Park and enjoy exciting mountain biking trails here.

Goblin Valley State Park Campground. Whatever you do here, it’s going to rock! When you get bored of taking in the view (hoodoos and goblins all around!), you can take rock climbing lessons.

3. Massachusetts: Best for Woodland Camping

We know — Massachusetts doesn’t usually feature high on lists of places to go camping. However, if it’s a woodland experience you’re after, you couldn’t choose a better state. That’s not just because of the modern amenities and beautiful views, but also because Massachusetts’ Department of Conservation and Recreation has embraced a staggered booking model that ensures you can reserve your spot ahead of time (and you won’t be left without a place to camp).

Campers have a total of 32 sites to pick from, including woodland and coastal campgrounds, but our three favorites are:

Mount Greylock State Reservation. Located in Lanesborough, this is the perfect place to go camping if you’re looking forward to enjoying the state’s highest peak in a relaxed environment. Open year-round, you’ll have the chance to try hunting, snowmobiling, hiking, skiing, or mountain biking — depending on the date you choose.

Nickerson State Park. You’ll feel right at home at any of the 400+ campsites in this beautiful National Park in Brewster, on Cape Cod. Nickerson is great for fishing, boating, kayaking, and horseback riding!

Mohawk Trail State Forest. Looking for a zen experience in one of the country’s most stunning woodland areas? You’ll come face to face with lots of wildlife, but otherwise, this forest is best for campers who simply want to relax.

4. Colorado: Best for Mountain Camping

If you’re from a warm state and you can’t wait to escape the heat, Colorado is an absolutely fantastic place to go camping. Think of exceptionally cool summers as a nice bonus to go along with the Rocky Mountain views! Colorado is not just one of the best states to enjoy the mountains, though — it’s also a top pick if you’re after a true wilderness experience. Because the state allows dispersed camping, you’ll be able to pitch your tent in nature without any amenities.

So, where in Colorado should you go? Good question! Why not start your planning by checking out these great spots?

Moraine Park. This campground in Rocky Mountain National Park is a wonderful base from which to plan your hiking, lakeside, and wildlife-viewing adventures.

The Great Sand Dunes Oasis campground gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a uniquely stunning landscape while enjoying pretty unusual activities. Sandboarding, anyone? Yes, it’s a thing!

The campground at Mueller State Park is definitely a great choice for all hiking enthusiasts, because you won’t get bored with the exciting trails and beautiful mountain views any time soon.

5. Minnesota: Best for Lakeside Camping

Photo by Matias North on Unsplash

Minnesota isn’t called the land of 10,000 lakes for nothing. Whether you love fishing, boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, or swimming, it’s your best camping destination if you crave a lakeside camping adventure. Of course, Minnesota is also a good choice if you simply want to enjoy the sound of rustling leaves, the smell of campfires, and the gentle breeze in your hair.

Where should you pitch your tent? With so many options to pick from, it isn’t easy to narrow your choices down, but you could start here:

Itasca State Park is home to the beautiful Mississippi River headwaters — as well as several relaxing campgrounds. Campfires aren’t just allowed, but even encouraged (responsibly, of course), as firewood is for sale there.

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park also offers several exciting campgrounds, including the new Shipwreck Creek campground. Hike the trails, explore the lighthouse, or just soak up the relaxing atmosphere.

Voyageurs National Park is the place to go if you love boating, primitive camping, or camping in winter. This vast park has a multitude of campsites, and while you’ll need to hike a few miles to find your woodland paradise, nobody will disturb you when you get there.

That Sounds Great, But Where Should We Go?

If you enjoyed this quick look at some of the most exciting campsites for a true wilderness experience, we wouldn’t blame you if you’re having trouble deciding where to go camping. After all, you only have so much free time — and you can’t see everything on your bucket list this year.

These questions should help you narrow down your choices:

Do you prefer woods, beaches, mountains, desert landscapes, or lakeside camping? Don’t even think — just answer the question!

Will you be pitching a tent, or do you plan to pull up in an RV? Many campsites cater to both camping styles, but not all do. If you’re planning to pitch a tent, do you prefer campgrounds with modern amenities, or do you want to test your skills and try out primitive camping?

What outdoor activities would you like to try this year? Go on — pick some that you’ve never dipped your toes in before. Whether it’s paddleboarding, snowboarding, sandboarding, rock climbing, fishing, or mountain biking, choosing an activity will force you to narrow your campground choices down a fair bit.

How experienced are you? If you’re going camping for the first time, we’d recommend a campground with modern amenities to ensure you can enjoy your time in the wilderness without feeling totally lost.

Once you decide where to go, don’t forget to make reservations in advance (where possible). Too many would-be campers leave it too late and discover there’s no space at the campground of their dreams.

Don’t be one of them, especially if you’re going out of state!

Let’s be honest here. Acute caffeine withdrawal is just about the fastest way to ruin your camping trip — and not just for you, either! If you’re the “don’t talk to me until I’ve had my coffee” type, and especially if that’s your guiding philosophy for much of the day, enjoying a good cup of coffee while camping isn’t optional.

Keep calm, stay caffeinated, and try these coffee hacks out in the wild — but whatever you do, make sure you have a solid backup plan in place.

1. Pre-Portion Your Coffee Into Waterproof Bags

Packing properly might not be all you need to have a wonderful camping experience, but it will get you about 30 percent there. That goes for your coffee, too, so make sure you’ve got a nicely organized setup.

Are you not sure what exactly to do with your coffee grounds? It’s easy enough. Pre-portion all your coffee grounds (or instant coffee) into Ziploc bags. Make sure to use the proper portion size for the drinking container you’re taking camping — it will probably be bigger or smaller than the mug you’re used to. Once you’ve figured out the correct amount, pack as many Ziploc bags as you think you’ll need, and then some.

The best part? Your coffee won’t get soaked and nasty, even when your backpack inevitably gets wet. As long as you choose handy waterproof bags and seal them properly, your coffee will stay nice just for you. If you’re not convinced, you can always seal off the top part of your Ziploc bag with duct tape for extra durability. Now, you’ll have easy coffee baggies ready to go!

This pack of Ziploc bags from Amazon should last you a while, but if you want to be more environmentally friendly, we’d suggest this Lerine 10-pack of reusable silicone bags. If you don’t want to portion out your coffee grounds, you can also store them in a plastic container or metal tin.

2. Buy Instant Coffee

If you’re a coffee snob, you might be gasping in horror at the mere suggestion of buying instant coffee. We know the feeling. However, you can’t deny just how convenient instant coffee is, especially when you’re going camping. All you need to do is boil clean water and add some instant coffee, and Bob’s your uncle.

Yes, its taste is objectively suboptimal compared to filtered coffee, but instant coffee still works wonders when you’re suffering from that dreaded coffee withdrawal.

Are you not ready to stoop so low as to drink instant coffee? We’d still recommend packing at least some instant coffee as a backup. Instant coffee is, after all, a lot better than no coffee — and you definitely just want to take our word for it, rather than finding out for yourself.

Here’s a nice box of single-serve packets of instant coffee from Amazon. You could also choose this big jar of instant coffee for a better deal.

3. Bring a Water Filter

Photo by Devin Avery on Unsplash

You may see coffee as the only central ingredient in your cup of coffee, but it’s time to rethink that. Without clean water, you’re going nowhere. If you’re dipping your toes into primitive camping, that part of the equation can get a little more complicated than you want it to.

Don’t go out of your way to bring all your fancy equipment to make coffee only to forget to take a water filter with you. That would be a tragedy! They’re not very expensive, and you’ll need a water filter in your camping kit even if you don’t drink coffee. This water filter is one of many options available on Amazon.

4. Take a Portable Coffee Maker (French Press, Moka Pot)

Unless you decide to stick to instant coffee on your camping trip, you’ll definitely need some kind of portable coffee maker. The two main choices are a French Press or an Italian Moka pot. Portable coffee makers designed especially for camping are also on the market.

With so many different options, you might not know which coffee maker is right for your camping trip, so let’s take a look at the options.

French press:

Delicious coffee.

Good for light and dark roast coffee.

Needs coarsely ground coffee. It’s a good idea to bring pre-ground coffee in a Ziploc bag (see above!).

Don’t let the usual glass design deter you. French presses can also have stainless steel designs that are great for camping.

It can cool down a bit fast, so it’s a good idea to put your coffee in a thermos after brewing.

Italian coffee maker (Moka pot):

Super portable, making it perfect for any backpacking trip.

Virtually indestructible.

Convenient with nearly no learning curve.

Makes very strong coffee.

Portable coffee maker:

Lightweight and easily fits into most bags.

It can only brew one coffee cup, so it’s not really suitable for big camping groups.

A bit hard to use, but incredibly easy to clean.

5. Get a Thermos

It’s always a good idea to bring a thermos along on your camping trip to keep your cup of coffee warm. Once you’ve finished brewing your delicious, steamy coffee, you can use your thermos as a hand warmer, too. You could even brew yourself a cup of coffee right before your camping trip to have it ready, and it’ll stay warm for an hour or two.

Check out this nice Stanley thermos from Amazon that will keep your coffee nice and cozy, for example!

6. Buy Powdered Milk

Do you take your coffee with milk? Powdered milk is a must! It won’t go bad in your backpack, you can store it for a long time, and it allows you to have coffee with milk on the go. You could even make campsite lattes if you wanted to! Are you in? You can get a big pack of powdered milk here, or just swing by your nearest Walmart or Target.

7. Make Cowboy Coffee

Photo by Hendrik Morkel on Unsplash

Cowboy coffee is fantastic for any camping trip. It’s really easy to make and requires nothing but a heat source, a kettle, and coffee.

Are you interested? Here’s how:

Boil some water in a camping kettle with the lid on. You can do this with a camping stove or even over a campfire.

After you bring your water to a rolling boil, remove it from the heat source and allow it to cool down for a minute. Don’t skip this step — if you do, your coffee will taste bitter!

Add coarsely ground coffee to your hot water — about one to two tablespoons per cup of coffee does the trick. Stir the coffee and put it back on the heat.

Wait for the coffee to simmer. You don’t want it to fully boil, or (you guessed it!) your coffee will be bitter. You’re good to go when you see small bubbles, but the water isn’t quite boiling yet.

Take the coffee off the heat and let it sit for two more minutes with the lid on the kettle.

Pour your coffee into a cup, making sure to leave the last little bits in the kettle, because all the grounds will sink to the bottom.

8. Invest In a Good Camping Stove

You can’t have a warm cup of coffee without a heat source. Camping stoves can be a bit bulky and hard to carry around, but if you’re planning to have warm meals and coffee, they’re totally worth it. Some camping stoves can fit nicely into your backpack, and these are a great start. For instance, this neat little portable camping stove can heat one liter of water.

9. Buy Coffee-Flavored Energy Bars or Caffeine Pills

Depending on just how desperate you are for a cup of coffee, you might want to turn to coffee energy bars or even caffeine pills. They don’t have the same warm, rich flavor of coffee, but they will get you caffeinated.

Think of these two options as the contingency plan you’re ashamed to put in place, but not to the point where you don’t consider it. While we’re not recommending specific coffee energy bars, this gives you a general idea of what to look out for. You can also get a big bottle of caffeine pills from Amazon. For emergency situations like dealing with actual caffeine withdrawal while building a shelter, only!

That About Covers Coffee, Doesn’t It?

Not quite! No matter what kind of coffee you decide to drink while camping, you’ll inevitably create some waste — and nothing is more important than cleaning up after yourself while camping.

If your campgrounds have trash collection, that makes things easier. Single-serve plastic should always be disposed of responsibly, while glass instant coffee containers can be recycled. As for coffee grounds, they are quite useful. If allowed, scattering them around actually acts as a reasonably effective insect repellent, and that can make your camping experience significantly more enjoyable!

Were you born into a camping family yourself? If so, chances are that there were aspects of the experience you didn’t look forward to at the time. Perhaps you hated the thought of leaving your neighborhood friends behind for the summer, were envious of those who got to enjoy resort-style vacations, or simply thought you’d hate doing without modern conveniences and sleeping in a tent.

Looking back, though, you probably realize that some of your favorite memories were made while camping. Singing songs around the campfire while making and eating s’mores, running around the wilderness with siblings and friends you made while camping, trying out canoeing for the first time, or buying ice cream from the campground store, anyone?

If you’re gearing up to give your kids the same amazing experiences, and it’s been a while since you last went camping, you’ll want to make sure the campground you choose is child-friendly — whether you’ve got little ones or teenagers.

This guide is packed with tips to make it happen.

What Makes a Campground Child-Friendly?

Photo by Janko Ferlič on Unsplash

This question is crucial — because it’s going to determine what you’re looking for. No two families will have the same set of criteria. The answer doesn’t just depend on the age of the children for whom you’re hoping to create an amazing camping experience, but also on your personal preferences.

Still, there are some things we can all agree on. We want children to be safe, have a wonderful time, and learn some new skills while camping. How you’re going to achieve that will differ from one family to the next.

Our criteria? Well, when it comes to little ones (let’s say, toddlers to eight-year-old kids), we want:

Modern restrooms and showers help us keep them clean.

A campground equipped with a well-stocked first-aid station and easy access for first responders, in case it’s needed.

Exciting playgrounds for small children to enjoy — but also opportunities to ditch these curated facilities in favor of mud, stones, sticks, and bird-watching. (After all, you want your kids to connect with nature!)

Child-friendly water activities are high on our list of must-haves as well. Pedal boats and inner tubes always make for great family fun, for example.

Call us crazy, but we want there to be a place where slightly older kids can get ice cream alone or buy some dinner supplies. Campground stores make for great memories!

Another essential ingredient? Other children! If a campground has a reputation for being family-friendly, your little ones will have lots of opportunities to play with other tiny campers.

Teenagers are a different story. They benefit from activities specifically organized for teens and an opportunity to break free from parents to explore nature with people their own age. Look for teen activities or ranger-led tour opportunities.

Your teens probably have WiFi high on their priority list, but if you’d love for them to unplug from the web and connect with nature instead, you may want to look for WiFi-free campgrounds.

Ready for some suggestions? Here they come!

1. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Mammoth Cave, KY

Why?

While Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Mammoth Cave offers plenty of opportunities to explore the great outdoors (caving, kayaking, ziplines, fishing, and more), it’s got that fun commercial feel that most small children go absolutely crazy for. You’ll have a hard time deciding whether to try mini golf, wagon rides, the waterpark, the floating obstacle course, or the gem mining experience — and that’s just the start! For the teens, there’s even a gaming arcade and full WiFi access.

2. Smoky Bear Campground, TN

The Smoky Bear Campground & RV Park is one of the many amazing family-friendly campgrounds within the Good Sam network. Nestled within the Northeastern part of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, it has all the amenities you could possibly want — including RV sites, cabins, and tent sites. It’s a clean and beautifully maintained base from which you can explore the Smoky Mountains as a family.

Why?

The Smoky Bear Campground is a wonderful choice for families who are looking for a camping experience with lots of organized activities but with a more natural (and less resort-like) feel. There’s a pool, a playground, fire rings, and even a library.

3. Pineland Camping Park, WI

With modern amenities like laundry facilities, fuel, and a wonderful campground store, you’ll be able to enjoy your wilderness experience in style. Despite that, Bluebell Campground definitely opens the door to a traditional camping experience.

Why?

This camping retreat near Sebago Lake in Maine is wonderful for families who want to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life — but still camp in comfort. Relax in a beautiful woodland area and pick from RV hookups, cabins, and tent sites that all include picnic tables and fire rings. Family & Friends Playground is that wholesome, all-natural campground you’ve been looking for if the camping resorts we looked at earlier fill you with dread.

Why?

Got small kids? They’ll be able to enjoy a fantastic playground and organized activities — but they’ll also have the freedom to potter around in nature without commercial attractions. Got teens? There’s a great swimming pool and a camp lodge with ping pong, billiards, and other fun games, but also a fishing pond. You, meanwhile, can be as active as you want — or just enjoy a camp meal cooked over your fire ring while soaking up the sunset.

7. Arrowhead Point Campground & Cabins, CO

Want a camping experience that gives you a full view of the Rocky Mountains while allowing you to explore nearby attractions like Denver, the Great Sand Dunes, and Pikes Peaks? Arrowhead Point Campground & Cabins caters to different camping styles, from tent sites to RV hookups and cabins.

Why?

Well, if we had to sum it up in four words, “guided Colorado river rafting” would probably do the trick, but there’s more. Hiking is one of those mandatory camping experiences, but at Arrowhead Point, you can explore the trails on horseback instead! You and your children can also look forward to fishing, ziplines, an absolutely amazing adventure park, and mountain bike trails!

Looking for Child-Family Campgrounds? Some More Tips!

We hope you enjoyed our recommendations, all of which allow you and your family to pitch a tent, pull up in your RV, or rent a cabin — but we know the campgrounds we featured won’t be within everyone’s reach.

Want to explore family-friending camping options closer to home or further afield?

Continue your search with these handy websites:

Reserve America — type in where you want to go and get a list of state and privately-owned campgrounds.

GlampingHub — if you want a luxury camping experience or you’re excited to stay somewhere unusual like a tree house or yurt.

The Dyrt — a great place to explore wonderful campsites near you (or far away!).

Kamgrounds of America — pick the perfect campsite for you and your family!

Once you narrow your options down a little, don’t forget to look for reviews posted by other families with children of similar ages as yours. This extra step will give you a more realistic idea of what to expect, and it can definitely help you avoid doozies!

Camping Games, Ideas and Tips

Sitting around a campfire at night is the quintessential camping activity — and, perhaps, one of the things you’re most looking forward to as you plan your next adventure. Once you’ve grilled some fish and made some s’mores, however, the odds are decent that some people in your party will start to get bored.

If you were having a dinner party at home, that would be about the time someone might suggest a board game or card game. Unfortunately, the messy campfire setup doesn’t combine well with any of your favorite games. (Bridge is not practical, there’s nowhere to set up Settlers of Catan, and Jenga sounds like quite the fire-starter, right?)

You could devolve into boredom or start arguing about politics, but where’s the fun in that?

Try these camping games, suitable for adult-only and family camping trips alike, instead, and discover that you don’t always need props to have a great time! None of these familiar games requires any specialized equipment or even a WiFi connection!

1. Charades

Everyone is familiar with this popular game, which is fun for the whole family! We won’t bother explaining the rules for that reason, but it’s good to keep in mind that you can always set a particular theme for your game of charades. You could act out characters from movies, celebrities, or activities — but you could also make a rule that all the topics must be related to camping.

Games of Charades get ridiculously silly at a significant fraction of the speed of light, ensuring that everyone will have a great time!

2. 20 Questions

You’ll know this one, too. One player thinks of an object, and everyone else takes turns asking a yes or no question to try to guess what it is. If no answer is found, the player who thought of the object wins. If you manage to guess it, you win. While 20 Questions is a childhood favorite, it can be fun for an adult-only group, too.

3. Storytelling

This lesser-known game can be a lot of fun, too, and it’s simple to play. One person kicks the story off with an opening sentence, and everyone else takes turns adding another sentence to the tale. Spooky!

4. Two Truths and a Lie (or Never Have I Ever)

You know this one, too, right? Someone tells two truths and a lie about something they’ve done, and it’s up to the rest of the camping party to guess which statement was a lie.

A related game, “Never Have I Ever,” is arguably a variation of this one. One person makes a statement about something they believe some people in the group might have done, and everyone who’s done it takes a drink. Non-alcoholic (and child-friendly) variations can simply involve putting your hands up or eating a s’more.

These two games are a great way to get to know each other better!

5. Guess the Song

You can play this one in several ways. Either hum a tune or take an obscure line from a popular song and have the other campers guess what it is. (For example, if you’re thinking of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up,” you might say, “Gotta make you understand” — because basically all the other lyrics immediately reveal the song.)

6. What’s in the Bag?

This game, which is great for camping, has several names, including Mystery Bag. Here’s how it works. You take a bag (a reusable shopping bag will do) or a blanket and hide an object in or under it. You then make people guess what it is.

The great thing about this game? You can collect things like pebbles, pine cones, flashlights, toilet paper rolls, or multi-tools, creating a nice mix of objects found in nature and the things you’ve brought with you.

7. Just a Minute

Just a Minute is a less popular verbal game we thought we’d include because you probably haven’t heard of it before. Here, you give one of the campers a random topic that they don’t know anything about — for example, fishing, long-haul trucking, chihuahua care, the lifespan of box fans, or the mechanics of Minecraft. They have to talk about it for a full minute to get a point. Everyone around the campfire takes several turns, and the camper with the highest number of points wins.

8. I Spy with My Little Eye

You definitely know this game, so not much needs to be said about it. Maybe one thing — I Spy with My Little Eye is actually quite hard to play in the dark, making it slightly more interesting.

9. Red Light, Green Light

This classic game goes by many different names, including Grandmother, and it’s definitely a children’s game. One person (usually called “It” or “Grandmother”) faces a tree. The others try to reach “It,” but they can’t be seen moving. When “It” turns around or yells out “red light,” everyone else has to freeze. If they’re seen moving, they either go back to the start or become the new “It.”

It’s a fun outdoor game that’s great for when some campers are bored of sitting around the campfire, but others want to continue roasting food or warming their hands.

10. Bonus Game if You Have WiFi: Spyfall

OK, we know we promised you WiFi-free games, but this one is too good to miss out on. If you do have 5G at your campground, definitely consider giving the (free) online version of Spyfall a go.

In case you haven’t heard of it, here’s a quick breakdown of how Spyfall works:

You’re all at a location (including a crusader army, ocean liner, cathedral, space station, or corporate party) and are assigned roles. One person is the spy and doesn’t know the location.

The spy needs to find out what the location is. Everyone else needs to discover who the spy is.

You take turns asking questions, like “What’s the food like down here?” or “Someone committed a crime. What was it?” to get the answers you need.

The spy wins if they guess the location before they’re found out. Everyone else wins by correctly identifying the spy, which is done by voting.

Spyfall is hilarious and definitely a great camping game for around the campfire, but you do need an app or website (there are several, all free) to randomly assign roles and locations, so not everyone will be able to play it.

You can find the free game right here: https://www.spyfall.app

A Final Word

Even though you probably know most of these games, we hope you found some fresh inspiration here. Should you get bored and be after more camping games to play, remember that any verbal game can add fun to your campfire experience, starting with games you typically play in the car.

People who have never gone camping often think about it as the ultimate budget vacation. Make no mistake, though — if you’re not careful, camping can get very expensive, very fast. These Camping On A Budget Saving Tips are going to show you that it can be very Affordable Outdoors.

The costs you can expect to incur while camping include campground fees, transportation costs, parking permits, food, and the cost of activities like kayaking or zip-lining. That’s assuming you already have the right gear (tents, hiking boots, tarps, camping stoves…), which you might not.

Whether you’re on a tight budget or you just hope to keep your costs down, camping can be affordable. This guide walks you through the top tips to save money in sensible ways.

Chase Down Free or Low-Cost Campsites

Private campgrounds with an abundance of convenient amenities can cost you and your party $50 or more per day. They might seem like the best entry point for people who are new to camping, but they don’t truly offer you an authentic camping experience — and they’re not budget-friendly.

Look for public camping grounds, national parks, and Bureau of Land Management sites, where camping is either free or very cheap. If you want to save even more money, choose sites that aren’t too far away from home to save on fuel. Because you still want to keep things exciting, look for places you’ve never been to before.

Camp During the Off Season

This tip actually catches two birds with one stone. Camping fees are nearly always cheaper during the off season, and you won’t have to deal with noisy crowds, either. If you’re chasing personal bliss and you want it to be cheap, stay away from camping during the peak summer months and holidays, and pick a nice weekend in the fall or a lovely week in spring, instead.

Even winter camping can be lovely, although you do have to come prepared.

Take Your Friends to Split Costs

Most campsites actually allow multiple tents and vehicles to occupy a single spot — without impacting the fee. While you should always check this in advance, it means that taking friends or relatives camping can reduce your overall costs.

It would be silly not to take advantage of this way to save money while camping, because nearly everyone will ultimately enjoy the experience more with a group of people around. Connecting with nature is great, but many hands make light work, and you’ll want a group of folks to play fun campfire games with at night!

Google Free Activities in Advance

What are you planning to do while camping? Plenty of activities cost money (and sometimes a lot), but you can nearly always find wonderful free activities, too. Once you settle on a camping spot, milk your friendly neighborhood search engine for all it’s worth to discover which free activities are available nearby.

You may just find out that there’s a guided stargazing tour available, that someone’s running a tour of the area, or that you can go swimming at a local lake. You never know!

Consider Renting Camping Equipment

Have you never been camping before, but have you always wanted to give it a try? If you don’t already have all the equipment you need, you may think you’ve got a steep investment ahead of you.

Quality tents can set you back anywhere from $100 to $1,000, depending on your expectations and how many people your tent needs to fit. Ultra-cheap tents are definitely on the market, but they won’t make you very happy if you want a decent camping experience. They’re completely off the table if you’re the type of person who always chases quality.

Consider looking for local tent rental companies. Even campgrounds may offer this service sometimes.

The advantage? You get to test out whether you actually enjoy camping without making a long-term investment. That way, you won’t have a luxury tent gathering dust in your garage if it turns out that you hate the experience.

Besides tents, these same rental services also often offer camping chairs, gazebos, camping grills and stoves, and other handy equipment.

These services can prevent unnecessary expenses in the short term, but they don’t make sense for regular campers. Once you’re ready to invest in camping equipment, research your options and look for deals. Some stores offer discounts for students, veterans, or seniors that might apply to you, but most run sales from time to time — especially during the off season.

Cook Your Own Meals

Photo by Myles Tan on Unsplash

Cooking your own meals won’t just save you money compared to eating out every day, but it also ensures that you’ll enjoy the real camping experience. Basic camping stoves are actually pretty affordable, and you can choose from countless super-easy but delicious camping recipes that you can prepare in a single pan.

Cooking while camping does require you to plan ahead. We recommend bringing non-perishable foods (including small amounts of spices) with you from home, and then acquiring fresh meat and veg on the go. You may need a small cooler, but those often cost less than a single restaurant meal.

While we’re on the topic, why not bring empty water bottles with you from home and fill them wherever there’s a tap for potable water? This has two advantages over buying bottled water wherever you go. It’s cheaper, but it’s also far more environmentally friendly.

Here you can find our article on 10 Easy Camping Cooking Recipes.

A Final Word

Camping can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be. Most campers spend around $50 a day, including campground fees and food, but your expenses are completely within your hands. If you’re not careful, you can easily spend $300+ per day — but if you plan ahead with the goal of minimizing your cost, it even becomes doable to spend $20 or less every day.

By choosing a no-fee public campsite, engaging in free activities like hiking, swimming, and fishing (free food!), and cooking your own food, you can definitely enjoy an ultra-cheap vacation. The good news? The less you spend, the closer to nature you’re forced to go. At the end of the day, isn’t that what camping is all about?

Easy Camping Recipes

Do you love cooking and experimenting with new flavors — and are you definitely not the type to make do with MREs or protein bars? Are you also pretty new to camping and unfamiliar with what it takes to cook on a camping stove? This guide is for you.

We’ll give you some easy, delicious, and well-balanced camping recipes that won’t make you run for the nearest restaurant. There’s something for everyone, too.

Must-Have Supplies for Outdoor Cooking

This guide assumes that you’ll have access to grocery stores on the go, and a means to store your fresh ingredients. You will, however, still need essential supplies. Most campers should aim to strike a balance between practicality and convenience, and some trade-offs will definitely need to be made along the way. That cast-iron Le Creuset pan should probably stay at home, for example, but a can opener will come in handy.

Don’t forget to read our article on: What Is The Best Gas For Your Camping Stove

Here’s what to bring to make the recipes on our list doable:

A camping stove, camping grill, or both (and the fuel to run these appliances).

Cooking pots and pans — at least one, but preferably two or more.

Grilling supplies like tongs, a spatula, and a grill brush.

A basic cutting board.

Mixing bowls — freezer containers can be a good substitute if you’re looking for something extra lightweight.

A knife, a can opener, a corkscrew, and other handy little tools — or a reliable multi-tool like a Leatherman or Gerber multi-tool. (You’ll still want a good chef’s knife even if you have a multi-tool! If you’re planning to eat fish, you’ll need a filleting knife, too.)

Aluminum foil.

A portable cooler to keep fresh ingredients good for longer.

You won’t want to bring your entire spice rack, but if you hate bland food with a vengeance, you can still add flavor to your food. It’s easy. Simply place a small amount of your favorite spices in Ziploc bags and tie them together with an elastic band.

You can bring non-perishables with you from home, but you should get fresh supplies while camping. Who knows? You might even be able to reel in a fish or two to enjoy!

(A final note: We’re going to assume that you’re an experienced cook, and we won’t provide precise measurements in these recipes. We promised you easy meals, after all.)

1. One-Pot Pasta

Photo by Jakub Kapusnak on Unsplash

One-pot pasta recipes have become very popular over the last few years, and you’ve got tons of different options. However, we’ll look at the classic that started the trend here — a light, tomato-based pasta that’s perfect for sunny days. Everything cooks together in the same pan from the start, making preparation and cleanup wonderfully easy.

Here are the ingredients. Remember to adjust them to the size of your party!

Tomatoes — the juicier, the better. We like aromatic cherry tomatoes.

A generous amount of garlic.

Lots of diced onions.

Salt and pepper to taste.

Sliced black olives to add once the dish is cooked.

Spaghetti.

(Olive) oil.

If available, garnish with fresh basil! (If not, dried basil works, too.) Beyond that, you don’t really need any instructions. Cook until the pasta is done, and enjoy.

2. Shakshuka

Photo by Jenn Kosar on Unsplash

Shakshuka is a popular Middle Eastern dish that’s delightfully tasty as well as easy to make. With lots of eggs, it will give you a royal dose of protein to fuel your camping adventures!

Countless different variations exist, but the basic version requires:

Oil — ideally olive oil.

Canned tomatoes.

Chicken eggs.

Garlic.

Diced onions.

Fresh herbs — parsley works best, but oregano, mint, dill, or thyme are good, too.

A pinch of cayenne pepper.

Salt.

Here’s how to prepare shakshuka:

Heat the oil over medium heat in a frying pan.

Add diced onions and fry until they soften.

Add garlic and cayenne pepper and fry for a few more minutes.

Add canned tomatoes until the base of your frying pan is covered.

Crack chicken eggs over the tomato base — you’ll usually be able to fit around five of them in.

When the eggs are done, to the consistency of fried eggs, remove your pan from the heat and add salt and fresh herbs.

To spice things up, you can add peppers, feta cheese, spinach, or pretty much anything else you think of.

3. Chicken Kebabs

This tasty recipe requires:

Boneless and skinless chicken breast or thighs, cubed.

Olive oil.

Garlic.

Lemon juice (fresh or store-bought).

Cumin.

Salt and pepper.

Let the chicken marinade for at least half an hour before putting it on skewers and grill them until done. You can even make chicken kebabs in the campfire!

4. Grilled Fish

Photo by Harris Vo on Unsplash

Grilled fish is a wonderful addition to your outdoor cooking plan. You’ll need:

Fresh fish fillets — salmon, tilapia, and trout all work well.

Olive oil.

Lemon slices.

Salt and pepper.

You can also add fresh dill or other herbs, if you can get your hands on them.

Clean the fish and cut it into smaller pieces if necessary. Preheat the grill and oil it. Cook between four and six minutes on each side, ideally closing the grill lid.

5. (Spanish) Omelet

We all know how to make basic omelets. Spanish omelets, with garlic, onions, and potatoes, are more substantial. They require you to precook potatoes, which you then fry with onions and garlic before adding the omelet over the top. Delicious!

6. Grilled Corn

Photo by Sudharma Putra on Unsplash

This one doesn’t require any explanation. You can use your grill or wrap your corn in aluminum foil to cook it over your campfire. Either way, you’ll have a tasty snack that everyone is sure to enjoy.

7. Baked Potatoes

Jacket potatoes are another camping classic! To make them, let your campfire die down until you’re left with a bed of hot embers. Wrap decently-sized (and well-cleaned) russet potatoes in aluminum foil and let them bake for around 45 minutes, after which you can unwrap one to check if they’re ready.

Toppings like coleslaw, cheese, sour cream, chives, and even baked beans complete the experience.

8. Stir-fry with Noodles

Photo by mifta farid on Unsplash

Instant noodles are easy to prepare while camping. Stir-fried vegetables turn this student favorite into a full and delicious meal. While you can pick any ingredients you like, consider:

Some protein — boiled eggs, tofu, chicken, or shrimp, for example.

Garlic and ginger are non-optional.

Mushrooms, carrots, peas, zucchini, spinach, and broccoli are all great vegetable options.

The magic lies in the sauce. Bring teriyaki, soy sauce, oyster sauce, or mushroom sauce.

Sunflower or canola oil are OK, but sesame oil is best for stir-fries.

9. Pancakes

Pancakes are great for when you’ve got a sweet tooth. Good, camping-friendly toppings include:

Nutella and sliced bananas.

Lemon and sugar.

Jam.

Maple syrup.

10. The Obligatory Burger

You know you’re going to want one eventually. Simply use store-bought burger patties, which can also be vegetarian, and add toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, and sliced cucumbers. Make a sauce out of mayonnaise, finely diced pickles, lemon, and finely diced onions.

A Final Word

All these easy recipes are wonderfully easy for camping novices — and you’ll soon get a taste for more. Remember to use biodegradable, eco-friendly dish soap while you’re camping, and aim to leave no trace!
